Developmental Delay Assessment

Developmental Delay AssessmentTwin Cities Education Consultants provide developmental delay assessments in five critical areas of childhood development including physical development, language development, academic or cognitive development, adaptive behavior, and social or emotional development. Children who qualify for these services are between the ages of birth to seven years old. Our specialists provide these developmental delay services to help catch the student up in their academic career so down the road they do not fall behind.

The five developmental delay assessments we provide are focused on different parts of childhood development that, if lacking, could cause a student to fall behind in academics.

      • Physical development
        • Gross motor skills: sitting, walking ups stairs, catching/throwing a ball
        • Fine motor skills: putting objects into a container, building with blocks, writing
      • Language development
        • Receptive language skills: ability to listen to and understand what another person is communicating
        • Expressive language skills: cooing for a baby, explaining how a pencil is used, describing what is happening in a picture
      • Academic/cognitive development
        • Literacy skills
        • Mathematics skills
          • Literacy and mathematics skills, measures a child’s ability to problem solve using intuition, perception, and verbal and nonverbal reasoning.  This area not only looks at the child’s ability to learn and understand but also to retain information and apply it as needed.
      • Adaptive behavior
        • Daily living skills: dressing, going to the bathroom, caring for self
      • Social/emotional development
        • Interpersonal skills: relationships with adults, relationships with peers, play skills
        • Self-regulatory skills: motivation and self-confidence skills and pro-social skills and behaviors

Before providing any of our developmental delay assessments to our students, we meet with family as well as school providers to discuss the need for the evaluation or assessment. Once the team and parents have agreed to the assessment in writing, our team will:

    • Observe the student in their learning environment.Developmental Delay Assessment
    • Perform formal and informal assessment in the five areas listed above.
    • Determine eligibility:  A student qualifies when they have shown they are 1.5 standard deviations below their same-aged peers (they are showing they are about 1 and a half years below their same-age peers).
    • The team and parents come back together to review the results and discuss the next steps for student programming.
