Summary of Professional Experiences:

Caroline has been a teacher for over fifteen years and has a wide array of experiences. Her first years of teaching were in elementary music where she wrote a skills-based elementary music curriculum and developed a standards-based approach to assessing students’ performances. Caroline was a high school and middle school band director for seven years, building a music program from scratch that went on to record in Studio B in Nashville. In 2014, Caroline was awarded the American School Band Directors’ Association’s Distinguished Young Band Director Award. Caroline’s professional passions in music education include how the arts are regulating for kids, nurturing critical thinking skills in the instrumental ensemble, and how music can support early literacy skills.

Caroline moved into special education in 2015. She helped build a special education program in a local charter school, teaching setting I and II and acting as coordinator. Caroline then built the setting III program and was a behavior specialist supporting the special education team. In these roles, Caroline helped with FBA’s, behavior intervention plans, pre-evaluation behavioral interventions, and wrote social-emotional learning standards based on the CASEL benchmarks. Finally, Caroline’s last teaching position before joining TCEC was in an integrated mental health setting IV EBD and ASD program. Joint with Canvas Health and Northeast Metro 916, this program integrated day treatment into the education setting. In this role, Caroline co-taught with a clinical therapist and worked to align best practices in mental health with best practices in education. Caroline’s professional interests in special education include looking at behaviors through multiple lenses, building creative programming that supports both students’ needs and teacher well-being, and using restorative justice/restorative practices to teach mental health skills.
